Premiering at the 2022 Sydney Film Festival to a sold out audience, 6 Festivals follows Maxie, Summer and James who share a deep bond and love for music. James (Rory Potter) is the entrepreneur of the trio, his sights set on a career as a promoter. Summer (Yasmin Honeychurch) has an incredible singing voice. Maxie (Rasmus King, Bosch & Rockit, SFF 2021) is the maestro of mischief. When James receives a devastating diagnosis, the friends – each with burdens to bear – throw themselves into a whirlwind of festivals in an attempt to escape reality. Featuring Birri Gubba and Wonnarua woman Guyala Bayles and top Australian acts Dune Rats, G Flip, Bliss n Eso, B Wise, Peking Duk, Ruby Fields, Jerome Farah, Kobie Dee and more – and fantastic footage shot at actual festivals.

6 Festivals was shot at leading Australian music festivals and locations in Queensland, New South Wales and Canberra through 2020 and 2021. Director and co-writer Macario De Souza was inspired to create 6 Festivals from his own personal experience as a touring musician, music fan, surfer and the environment he grew up in.

Macario De Souza comments; “Music festivals are a rite of passage for young Australians. Everything about that world is exciting to me. The pre-festival anticipation, the road trip, the surf along the way, the chance of love, lifetime memories with mates, your favourite bands live, the adrenaline of thousands of punters screaming, the after parties, the come down/hangover, the dreaded drive home and the excitement for the next festival! It’s a place where you can momentarily escape your normal world and lose yourself collectively with your crew”.

SYNOPSIS:

When DI Rachita Ray (Parminder Nagra; ER, Bend It Like Beckham), a British Asian policewoman new to homicide is assigned to investigate the suspected honour killing of a young Muslim man, she quickly realises the suspects can’t be guilty. The evidence against the two brothers from a British Hindu family is flimsy at best but her attempts at conveying this to her superiors and her colleagues fall on deaf ears. Hidden biases and a keenness to wrap the case up mean no one is listening to her until her probing leads the team to a much more sinister crime. As she uncovers a complex web of deceit within organised crime, she also lays bare the wounds deep within herself that she’s spent a lifetime ignoring – wounds that are born from a desperate desire to ‘fit in’, despite not looking the part.

Featuring 4 x 60 min dynamic episodes
