SYNOPSIS:

With the 95th Academy Awards approaching us in March, Dendy Cinemas is celebrating the great cinematic achievements of the past with a selection of our favourite Best Picture winners over the last nine decades including
silent films and Golden Age classics plus neo-noir thrillers and historical epics.

Dendy will raise the curtain with the 45th Anniversary of THE DEER HUNTER on 26 January and screen 14 Best Picture winners through to March 12 with our closing screening of GONE WITH THE WIND. You can see what else is screening and purchase your tickets here.

The very first Academy Awards ceremony took place on May 16, 1929. A largely private affair, it was an intimate dinner hosted by swashbuckling star Douglas Fairbanks at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Consisting of 270 people who each paid $5 ($87 in 2023) to attend, the ceremony portion lasted a mere 15 minutes, as the winners had already been notified three months earlier.

Fast forward 94 years and the Oscars have well and truly become the apex of Hollywood’s awards season and remain as divisive as ever. The Oscar nominations for 2023 will be announced on 24 January. Keep an eye out on the Dendy website to see when we will be screening this year’s nominees and winners.
